To improve their lives, people in
the informal sector have to organize into groups and play active
roles in the developmental process. The urban poor are exerting
unprecedented pressure on state policy. To achieve their goals,
they need support from non-governmental organizations with
training, managerial, and policy advocacy skills.
What is Grassroots
Development Institute (GDI)
Grassroots Development Institute (GDI) is a
non-governmental organization established in 1991 as an outgrowth
of the Duang
Prateep Foundation, a development and charity
organization. GDI has been functioning under the leadership of
Mr.Sompong Patpui, who is well known for his 20 years of
community development work. GDI is host organization of LIFE
program UNDP and active member of Thai-Civil Society Network.
Objectives
1. To study and make available data relating to
the lives of the urban poor, so that long term planning of social
development work will be easier to accomplish.
2. To carry out campaign programs, research, and education at the
grassroots level, with broad participation of children, youth,
and community leaders.
3. To train workers and people interested in drug prevention,
education, and urban development work.
4. To disseminates information and raise public awareness about
slum problems and solutions.
5. To advocate improvement of public policies affecting the urban
poor.

Staff and Budget
Administrative costs and staff numbers are kept
very low. GDI is entirely supported by private donations and
grants from funding agencies. Mr.Sompong Patpui, GDI's current
Director, invites you to contribute.
Social Impact
GDI plays a creative role in supporting
development activities which are initiated and implemented by the
urban poor. The purpose of GDI is to promote development models
and strategies that pave the way for equality and social justice
in Thai society.
We do hope that our work toward
this goal will be supported by overseas friends. This web site
still need more contribution. LIFE-UNDP is
main sponsor of web site. Budget of web page creation is very
limit. Webmaster contribute a lot of time to update new pages.
